I'm currently reading The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems, by Jeff Raskin. The explosion of new technologies like PDA's, iPods, Tablet PCs, Service Oriented Architectures that expose complex systems like mapping, searching the internet, searching large databases has opened up countless doors of opportunity for developers and entrepreneurs. At this moment, most of us are used to our 104-key keyboard and a 2-button mouse.
Traditional and common systems (register it's worth it!) seem to be only scratching the surface of what these new technologies and systems are capable of.
New technologies are enabling more simple, practical interfaces. The iPod “ClickWheel” is a beautiful example.
Another example, the one that inspired this post, is Dasher. If you haven't checked it out yet, do so - it's amazing. (Licensed under GNU General Public License)
