My wife's golden birthday is on Saturday, mine is on Sunday.
We share our 7th year married on the 13th of June, and we'll be in Orlando for TechEd from the 4th til the 12th. The next few weeks are going to be crazy.
Staying happy...
I hear it time and time again, coders and their wives, and their nightly rituals... usually consisting of some combination of side-projects, a laptop, and a lot of stress in one corner, and the wife, some arbitrary tv show, and the couch as a bed (til he takes her to bed sometime much later) in the other corner. Over the years, we've struggled with this on a regular basis, but we try very hard to spend time with each other too.
After 7 years, we've found some very good common ground, starting with never play Stratego (hundreds of games, I've only won a handful of times, yet she refuses to play poker... she could make a lot of money at the table with her skills, against me anyways, she reads me like a book)...
Instead, these have really helped us keep each other on our toes*:
[GIPF project] - I look forward to my regular YINSH beating from her...
[Lost Cities] - We have a lot of fun with this quick game, I can hold my own against her usually, but when I lose I get annihilated.
[Balloon Cup] - Timing and patience, I beat her every time (this game is going the way of Stratego unless I start letting her win a little).
“German gaming” is still gaining steam here in the U.S. For a great overview of the scene, check out the weblogs of Chris Brooks and Susan Rozmiarek.
(* along with cooking together, catching a movie now and then, working on the house, and raising 2 kids and a dog, etc)
